I'm not lost, but I don't know where I am

I've been laying low lately, but had to poke my head out and point to the takingitinturns fic exchange which is in full swing.  My gift, Through This Glass Darkly, got posted yesterday, and it is amazing.  Just when you think you've read every possible take on Harry and Ginny getting together after the war, the talented miss_daizy comes along and takes your breath away.  It's 1939 words carefully arranged into a powerful, multi-layered emotional journey.  Her characterizations are realistic to me, and it's just stunning.  Chances are if you're on my flist you've already read it, but if you haven't, you definitely should.  You can find it here.

Speaking of takingitinturns , my own fic is in progress.  My beta has been most patient, and I feel terrible about missing the deadline, but it is one of those fics that just keeps growing and growing.  On the plus side,  I'm fairly happy with it, and (fingers crossed), I think the recipient will like it.

I have H/G fic, about 4600 words, PG (for language and mentions of parental nudity).  Anyone interested in giving it a read through?

You have just under 11 hours to sign up for takingitinturns latest fest.  Do come join the party!

Lots of people have signed up, but there are a few notables missing.  I know:  mickawber_fics is on hiatus, shocolate is watching Olympics and writing drabbles and writing Ron Big Bang and lots of other things, hermette is somewhere in Camelot writing a Neville Big Bang, and lnalvgd is subtexting with her man, but you're some of my favorites, and it always makes me happy when you write H/G.  And be warned:  if you don't sign up, I will probably come begging for beta and Brit pick advice for whatever I write :)

Happy birthday, r_becca!Collapse )

magglenagall agreed to beta this on short notice and with an underestimated word count.  She did a lovely job, and I'm very grateful.  Any remaining errors are mine alone.  Obviously, I own nothing.  If you read it, I hope you enjoy it.  Concrit and reviews are always welcome.

One of my New Year's goals is to post a little more frequently - once a month, or so.  Consider this the January post.

I want to remind everyone to vote at the hpgw_otp Best of 2009 Awards.  There are some wonderful works of fiction and art so please go vote.  I only wrote one fic this year, Falling Slowly, and I was incredibly honored and pleased to see it among some of the nominees.  To whomever nominated it - THANK YOU.

If you're a fan of red wine (and who isn't?), you might want to try a glass of this as you're reading through all of those great stories and looking at that lovely art.  Affordable and very tasty.

If you want to read something on actual paper, I'd recommend "The Help" by Kathryn Stockett.  I'm probably biased because I grew up in the American South not too long after the events of this book, which take place in Mississippi in 1962.  I have an abiding interest in the civil rights movement, and I knew plenty of people growing up that had "help" (the southern word for maids).  I don't think those are prerequisites for enjoying it, though.  It was the first novel I've been able to tear myself away from fanfiction and real life long enough to read in a long while.  If you have time and/or interest, please give it a try and let me know what you think.

I rarely post anything, much less anything personal, but this is a big thing.

My mother-in-law, age 83 years and 40 days, died this morning. She was born and raised on a family farm along the Missouri River, the 11th of 13 children and the youngest daughter. She entered the convent at the age of 13 and took her final vows at age 20. She served the church as both musician (earning a Master's degree in Music) and teacher until she left the convent in 1964 at the age of 38. Within six months, she had met and married a widower who happened to be a farmer. At a time when pregnancies after age 35 were uncommon, she bore two children in the following two years.

She was a gifted composer and arranger, and she served as the choir director in her parish for over 20 years. She continued to live on the farm until Alzheimer's disease made it impractical for her to live alone. She loved to play cards and was an avid traveler. Even as her condition robbed her of her memories, she continued to play the piano (until a couple of weeks ago) and was always friendly and quick with a smile and a hug. She was a dear woman who will be missed.
